Vincennes University baseball wins home opener against Ancilla

Vincennes, Ind. - Vincennes University baseball hosted a chilly home opener on Friday afternoon against Ancilla College, winning 7-2. This brings VU’s record to 2-3.

 

Sophomore RHP Nate Toone Pitched through the sixth inning of Friday afternoons game, allowing 6 hits and two runs. Sophomore LHP Ryan Robison was called upon to start the seventh and earns a save, allowing only one hit, walking one, and striking out four.

 

The Blazers put up one run in the first, one in the third with thanks to a Trent Weiss triple, multiple contributions adding two in the fifth, and one run in the eighth to finish off the game.

 

Coach Chris Barney says

 

“Obviously our pitching was really good today, and we played a solid game defensively, which we’ve shown to be strong with this season so far. Our hitting really stepped it up for us in this game as well.” 

 

Next up

The Trailblazers host Ancilla College Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1:30 PM EST. This will be immediately followed by a game against Milwaukee Area Tech at 4:00 PM EST. Both games are scheduled as 7 inning games and will be hosted at Jerry Blemker Field in Vincennes.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

NJCAA spring sport cancellation

The NJCAA announced on March 16 the cancellation of all spring sport competition and all upcoming basketball championships, effective immediately, due to the evolving COVID-19 situation. Spring competition includes all practices, regular season, postseason, and national championship play.

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
