Vincennes University falls in NJCAA Men’s Basketball Rankings

VINCENNES, Ind. – Vincennes University fell from No. 1 in the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Rankings.

The Trailblazers are No. 9 in the rankings released on Jan. 13.

VU received 278 points after losing to host Olney Central College on Jan. 8. The Blazers (15-2) bounced back with a win on Jan. 11 against Shawnee.

Ranger (Texas) regained the No. 1 spot from VU and received 10 of the 16 first-place votes. Florida SouthWestern State jumped to No. 2 from No. 3 with four first-place votes.

Mineral Area (Mo.) and Pearl River (Miss.) earned the other first-place votes. Mineral Area moved up No. 3 from fifth. Indian Hills (Iowa) took over No. 4 after being ranked sixth a week ago. Pearl River dropped one spot to fifth.

The top 10 teams are:  Ranger (390 points), Florida SouthWestern State (385), Mineral Area (340), Indian Hills (336), Pearl River (328), Tyler (316), Northern Oklahoma Tonkawa (300), Clarendon (284), VU (278) and Tallahassee (274).

VU returns to the court on Jan. 15 and it’s a big night as VU celebrates 1990s superstar Shawn Marion. The NBA champion and four-time NBA all-star Shawn Marion will be honored by his alma mater with a special ceremony at halftime against Lake Land. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. EST in the P.E. Complex.

VU received points in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Rankings, but not enough to crack the top 25. The Lady Blazers, winners of 14 straight games, received four points in the Jan. 13 poll. They are second out of five teams in the honorable mention or Others Receiving Votes category.

The Lady Blazers (17-3) play next on Jan. 22 against Kaskaskia at 5 p.m. EST in the P.E. Complex.

Play for Kay Cancer Awareness

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. Kay Yow was a college head coach for 38 years and past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Her name is synonymous with North Carolina State. She is a member of the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame and achieved more than 700 career victories. Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. She passed away in 2009 after an on-again, off-again battle with the disease.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship Fund - The VU Foundation awarded a record $1.4 million scholarship dollars of VU Foundation and University funds for the 2015-2016 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  

These included awards to students from 10 states across the country and 4 international awards.  

Currently the VU Foundation manages over 540 scholarship and department funds, with 259 new funds created in just the last 10 years.
