Vincennes University reclaims No. 1 men's basketball ranking

VINCENNES, Ind. – Vincennes University is No. 1 again in the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Rankings.

VU earned six first-place votes and 386 points in the poll released on Jan. 6. The Trailblazers (14-1) returned to the top spot they held in the first regular-season poll on Nov. 11. VU was also ranked No. 1 in the preseason.

We’re mid-year now and it starts to have a little bit of bearing at this time of year,” VU Men’s Basketball Coach Todd Franklin said. “You worry about the ability to get a good seed at the national tournament and get a bye. You worry about getting an at-large berth if you need it. The higher you’re rated later in the year the greater chance you have of positives when it comes to those things.

“We’ve played 15 games out of our 30. (The No. 1 ranking) probably means a little bit more now than it did in the preseason because now it’s a little bit off the body of work that you may or may not have done.”

The Blazers made the jump to No. 1 from No. 2. They were ranked second in polls released Dec. 9 and Dec. 16.

VU takes over the No. 1 ranking from Ranger (Texas), which earned seven first-place votes and 378 points. Ranger (16-1) lost 73-72 in overtime to Howard (Texas) on Dec. 31. The Trailblazers beat Ranger 87-77 in the Division I national championship game last season.

The top five teams in the latest rankings are VU (386 points), Ranger (378), Florida SouthWestern State (371), Pearl River (354) and Mineral Area (337).

VU is in the midst of a nine-game win streak and is 12-0 at the P.E. Complex this season.

The Trailblazers are closing in on 1,800 all-time wins and are positioned to become only the second team to reach the milestone. VU currently has 1,799 wins. Hutchinson (Kansas) is the current record holder with 1,816 wins.

Next up for the Trailblazers is a road game against Olney Central Jan. 8 at 8:30 p.m. EST. VU plays at home on Jan. 11 against Shawnee at 7 p.m. EST.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
