Vincennes University's Matteo Capello wins pole vault national title

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Vincennes University freshman Matteo Capello (Turin, Italy) continues to stun by winning a national title in the pole vault with a vault of 5.30m at the 2019-20 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships Friday and Saturday.

This sets the new meet record, knocking down the former meet record of 5.28m set by Johnson County's Kyle Dennis in 2006.

The Trailblazers finished in the top ten in nine separate events.

VU placed second in the men's distance medley with a time of 10:10.64. The distance medley team for nationals was composed of sophomore Maxwel Kiplagat (Iten, Kenya), freshman Jahod Fair (Indianapolis, Ind.), freshman Manamanya Opiew (Indianapolis, Ind.), and sophomore Milan Todorovic (Belgrade, Serbia).

The Blazers had another second-place finish in the women’s pole vault by freshman Makinzi Meurer (Bicknell, Ind.) who managed a vault of 3.45m.

Todorovic placed eighth in the mile with a time of 4:16.88. Freshman Cole Sumner (Lawrenceville, Ill.) vaulted 4.50m in pole vault to finish ninth.

Kiplagat clocked a time of 8:42.98 to place 10th in the 3,000m run. Freshman Ryan Golliher (Hagerstown, Ind.) took 10th in the weight throw (14.75m). The men’s 4x800 relay crossed the finish line 10th in 8:05.05.

The women’s distance medley of sophomore Kaylee Lange (Vincennes, Ind.), freshman Chloe Knepp (Montgomery, Ind.), freshman Kyra Young (South Bend, Ind.) and freshman Meagan Moreno (Morton, Ill.) placed 10th with a time of 13:14.82.

In the team standings, VU men’s team placed 13th with 19 points and the women’s squad scored eight points for 15th place.

VU Track and Field Coach Chris Gafner says. . .

"It was a successful ending to an overall successful indoor season. The competition at the NJCAA National Championships was some of the best I've ever seen, but we rose to the occasion to take several All-American honors. To finish in the top two in three different events is a testament to all of the hard work this group has put in as a team. I'm very proud of the way the team competed and I'm excited to see what we can accomplish this outdoor season."

Notes

  • Capello was named the USTFCCCA Region Field Athlete of the Year and VU’s Tim Marsee was named Midwest Assistant Coach of the Year.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
