Vincennes University Track & Field boasts record breaking showing at the GVSU Big Meet Invite

Allendale, Mich. – Vincennes University freshman Matteo Capello (Turin, Italy) continued his record-breaking streak by besting his own NJCAA national pole vault record with a performance of 17 feet 5.75 inches (5.33 meters). He also broke the VU school record and now holds 5 of the top 9 pole vault marks in NJCAA history.

Not to be outdone, the rest of the VU squad turned in excellent performances. Sophomore Milan Todorovic helped to lead the charge by winning his heat of the 800m in a blistering time of 1:53.26 which was second best in VU history and only 4 hundredths of a second behind Trailblazer legend Robert Murphy. He moved into the eighth position on the NJCAA national rankings list. Todorovic doubled back exceptionally the next day with a 4:14.80 in the mile run. His time was the third best in VU history and moves him into the seventh position on the NJCAA list.

Also improving their positions on the NJCAA list were freshman Cole Sumner and freshman Makinzi Meurer. Sumner finished fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 15 feet 3.75 inches (4.67m) moving into the 6th spot on the NJCAA list. Meurer finished 13th at GVSU in a very deep field with a mark of 11 feet 7 inches (3.53m). Her mark moves her into third on the NJCAA list.

Sophomore Maxwel Kiplagat had a strong showing in the men's 3000m run improving his time to 8:34.91.  This was the second best mark in VU history, besting a mark that he set two weeks ago at the University of Indianapolis. Also running well for the Trailblazers was the 4x400m relay team of Damien Ross, Josh Hode, Jahod Fair, and David McCullough finishing in fifth place with a time 3:26.50.

VU head coach Chris Gafner says

"Matteo has proven to be a machine. His ability to mentally prepare is second to none. What Matteo and Coach Tim Marsee have done so far this season has been phenomenal.”

"Overall this was another strong showing for the VU team. We had several personal and season bests.  We still have several athletes that are close to qualifying for the NJCAA indoor national meet. We hope to get those final qualifying marks this Friday at the Friday Night Special at Eastern Illinois University.
