Vincennes University volleyball signs another recruit

VINCENNES, Ind. – Anna Johnsey (Westfield High School/Westfield, Ind.) will join the Vincennes University volleyball program for the 2020 season, head coach Gary Sien has announced.

The 6-foot middle blocker and opposite hitter has signed with the Trailblazers.

She recorded 198 kills, 77 blocks and a .316 hitting percentage in 32 matches for Westfield. The Shamrocks finished third in the Hoosiers Crossroads Conference with a 4-3 record and posted a 21-11 overall record.

Johnsey made the 2019 Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association (IHSVCA) Watch List. She was the 2019 Defensive Most Valuable Player. She received All-Hoosiers Crossroads Conference (HCC) honors in 2019. She earned Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA) 4A First-Team All-State honors. She appeared on the Ultra Ankle Junior Volleyball Association (JVA) Watch List in 2017 and 2018. In 2018, she was also the Most Improved Player and All-Hamilton County.

"Anna comes to us with experience in top level competition on the high school and club level,” Sien said. “She is the second player (2018, Breanna Metzger) in program history to be named to the JVA Watch List. Anna led Westfield in 2018 and 2019 in blocking which is one of the main reasons why we recruited her.

“Anna will have a chance to replace sophomores Ryli Bobbit and Ariana Gentzler as these two ranked in the top seven for total blocks in the nation in 2019. She is also able to hit at a high percentage and she is proficient in hitting in front of and behind the setter.

“The neat thing is that Anna contacted us due to our academic offerings! We are excited for her as this is a well-suited opportunity for her in the classroom and on the court."

Johnson will major in computer science. Her academic achievements include National Honor Society, French Honor Society and Academic Honors and Technical Honors.

"Anna Johnsey was a three-year varsity middle blocker for the Westfield Shamrocks,” Westfield High School coach Sandra Burks said. “Anna finished off her senior season earning a number of awards. Anna is a leader on the court through her disciplined play. She was a reliable offensive weapon who forced our opponents to make defensive adjustments, and our first line of defense.

“We wish Anna all the best as she moves on to Vincennes University to play for the Trailblazers.”

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
