Vincennes University volleyball team wins 10th straight match

CENTRALIA, Ill. - The Vincennes University volleyball rallied after dropping the first two sets to defeat host Kaskaskia, 22-25, 24-26, 25-9, 25-20, 15-8 and win its 10th consecutive match on Tuesday.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Alison Smith (Oakland, Ill.) contributed a career-high 23 kills, while adding eight digs. Sophomore Grace Doane (Vincennes, Ind.) added a dozen kills.

Freshman Savannah Grimes (Dieterich, Ill.) topped the team with 29 assists, while sophomore Lauren McCrary (Vincennes, Ind.) totaled 23.

Sophomore Brantli Lannan (Linton, Ind.) contributed a team-high 14 digs, while Grimes and sophomore Ryeligh Fidler (Linton, Ind.) both added 13.

Grimes served the only two aces in the win.

Sophomore Ariana Gentzler (Paxton, Ill.) and freshman Breanna Metzger (Tennyson, Ind.) both registered eight blocks.

VU Coach Gary Sien says. . .

“This was a great win for us. We didn’t have our overall game in the first two sets, though it was close in both. Our blocking took over and we had the majority of our 25 blocks in sets three through five. We also served tougher and we executed well on offense. It was another gut check for us to win in overtime.”

  • The Trailblazers are 22-13 overall and 12-1 in the month of October.
  • Sien was pleased with the team’s offensive execution, noting that the Trailblazers hit .353 as a team.
  • Sien expects VU to be the No. 2 seed in the NJCAA Division I region tournament starting Nov. 1 at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Illinois.
  • The Trailblazers play their final home match at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 against Shawnee.
