Vincennes University wins Region 24 men's basketball opener

 

CENTRALIA, Ill. – The sixth-ranked Vincennes University men’s basketball team opened Region 24 play with an 87-57 win against Kaskaskia on Wednesday.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Kevin Osawe (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) poured in a career-high 24 points, including 15 in the second half. Sophomore Craig Porter (Terre Haute, Ind.) contributed 11 points. Freshmen Randy Tucker (Rock Island, Ill.) and John Ukomadu (Detroit, Mich.) scored 10 points apiece.

Notes

  • Down five points in the first half, the Trailblazers used a 12-0 run to take the lead. VU led 42-35 at halftime.
  • Wednesday’s win improved VU’s overall record to 7-1.
  • The Trailblazers avenged a 78-76 loss to Kaskaskia last season in the semifinals of the NJCAA Division I District 16 Tournament on March 6, 2019. VU went on to win the national championship.

VU plays at home Saturday against Harry S. Truman at 6 p.m. EST in the P.E. Complex.

Play for Kay Cancer Awareness

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. Kay Yow was a college head coach for 38 years and past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Her name is synonymous with North Carolina State. She is a member of the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame and achieved more than 700 career victories. Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. She passed away in 2009 after an on-again, off-again battle with the disease.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship Fund - The VU Foundation awarded a record $1.4 million scholarship dollars of VU Foundation and University funds for the 2015-2016 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  

These included awards to students from 10 states across the country and 4 international awards.  

Currently the VU Foundation manages over 540 scholarship and department funds, with 259 new funds created in just the last 10 years.
