Vincennes University women’s basketball advance through to semifinal of Midwest District Tournament

VINCENNES, lnd. – The Vincennes University women’s basketball team finalized a perfect 14-0 home record in the quarterfinals of the Midwest District Tournament against Shawnee, winning in confident fashion 107-45 on Tuesday at the P.E. Complex.

VU (27-4) started off the game hot, doubling Shawnees score in the first quarter 26-13, and didn’t ease up in the second quarter leaving it at 55-19 heading in to the half. Shawnee went on a short-lived run in the third quarter, only for the Blazers to inevitably bounce back to the aggressive playstyle they’re known for, exiting the third quarter 87-29. Throughout the game it was clear that if Shawnee wasn’t going to let off the gas, neither would the Blazers, having more than doubled Shawnee’s score by the final whistle and not allowing Shawnee the lead once in the game.

VU Statistical Leaders

Freshman Amani Brown (Terre Haute, Ind.) led the Blazers in scoring with 30 points, 15 of which coming from behind the arc. Brown also had 8 steals and 6 assists. Sophomore Jaynice Stovall scored 18 points, with 4 assists and 9 steals. Sophomore Jhala Henry (Jeffersonville, Ind.) scored 23 points, also mustering 15 from three. Henry added on to that with 4 steals.

VU Assistant Coach Clyde Buck says. . .

“We’ve beat both of our possible opponents for the semifinals twice already this season. Rend Lake will have a little bit of an advantage playing on their home floor for the semifinal game, but we can’t let that deter us from our goal of getting to the national tournament. So, this games behind us now, and we just have to stay in the mindset that it’s a new day, a new game, and be ready to play our absolute hardest. Our girls have played hard on the defensive end all year, and as long as we don’t turn it over, and we continue shooting the ball well, we’ll have a chance to beat a lot of people. And tonight, it was pretty obvious that we had a lot of contributions from off the bench, and I think that’s going to help us tremendously moving forward. This is a really focused and motivated group. Our sophomores were in the championship game last year and know what it’s all about.”

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
