Vincennes University women’s basketball defeat Olney Central at home

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University women’s basketball team defeated Olney Central 87-73 Wednesday night.

The Trailblazers started out the night slower than what they’re used to, leading only 41-28 at halftime. By this point in the game, sophomore Fess Hawkins had already managed to post a double-double with 12 rebounds and 13 points.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Fess Hawkins (Bentonville, Ark.) had an impressive 19 boards with 15 points.

Sophomore Jhala Henry (Jeffersonville, Ind.) had 21 points on the night with 12 of those points coming from behind the arc, five rebounds, and seven steals.

Freshman Amani Brown (Terre Haute, Ind.) put up 24 points and eight assists.

Coach Harry Meeks says. . .

“I think we got off to a slow start, and I don’t think we pushed the ball like we should have, fast break wise. We were letting the ball come in on the wrong side of the press and we just have some things to straighten out. When they went to that 3-2 zone in the second half, I had trouble getting our players to do what we do against a 3-2 zone and then finally after we got in to it, we got any shot we wanted. Olney are a good team, and they’ve gotten better and better as the years have progressed.”

“Fess Hawkins is nationally ranked as far as rebounding and field goal percentage. We expect that out of her every night, and she knows that. She had a good game, but not as good as I’ve seen her play. I know you can’t play at your best all the time, but we’ve gotten to where we expect that from her. She’s a great person, she plays hard, and I never have to worry about her effort. Incredible team player as well. I never have to worry about her giving everything she’s got.”

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
