Vincennes University women’s basketball lose in hard fought semifinal battle

INA, Ill. – The Vincennes University women’s basketball team battled it out to the end on Thursday night in the semifinal of the Midwest District Tournament against Rend Lake, losing 86-82.

VU (27-5) started off the night as has become custom, with the full court press. This plan quickly changed as the Blazers had five fouls within the first four minutes of play. By the fifth minute, both teams had amassed five fouls each, including a technical for VU. Play was back and forth with the lead changing seven times in the first half and the teams went in to halftime deadlocked at 34-34.

The second half played out as a similar story to the first, with nine lead changes in a back and forth battle. The Blazers found themselves down by 6 points with 19 seconds left in the game, and despite two technical fouls called on Rend Lake, were unable to close the gap.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Jaynice Stovall (Covington, Ken.) led the Blazers with a career high 35 points, going 5-5 from the three-point line, and scoring 10 free throws. Stovall entered the game having the 2nd highest three-point percentage in the nation. Sophomore Fess Hawkins (Bentonville, Ark.) Put up a double-double with 13 points, including her third 3-pointer of the season, and 14 rebounds. Freshman Amani Brown (Terre Haute, Ind.) scored 17 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists.

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
