Vincennes Wins 5-Set Thriller Over Lincoln Trail in Volleyball Home Opener

VINCENNES, Ind. -  The Vincennes University volleyball team took three to five sets over Lincoln Trail in VU’s first home match of the season, by scores of 25-15, 25-20, 27-29, 23-25, 15-9.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Ryleigh Fidler and freshman Savannah Grimes both had double-doubles with Fidler ending her night with 14 kills and 13 digs, and Grimes’ team leading 25 set assists and 12 digs. Sophomore Alison Smith led the Trailblazers with 17 kills, with sophomore Grace Doane and freshman Breanna Metzger finishing with 6 kills each. Freshman Morgen Tinkle finished with 21 set assists. Vincennes found block opportunities difficult to come by with Metzger leading VU with 3 and sophomore Ryli Bobbitt finishing with 2.

VU Coach Gary Sien says. . .
Coach Sien attributed the lack of block opportunities to Lincoln Trail’s offensive strategy. Sien also added that he liked the energy on the VU side after winning the first two sets by a combined 15 points, but the momentum of the match quickly shifted Lincoln Trail’s way after winning the next two set. The Trailblazers responded well in the fifth set, jumping out to a 9 – 1 lead. “We did comeback with that run, but why does it take 2 sets to respond” Sien challenged his team, “Any team can beat you if you’re not on task”. When asked about the offensive performance of Alison Smith Sien said, “When she keeps the ball in play, she is hard to stop”.

  • Vincennes evens their record at 2 – 2 on the season.
  • Vincennes has won their home opener 4 years in row.
  • Vincennes extends their home winning streak to 11 matches, dating back to last season.
  • Savannah Grimes recorded her first-career double-double.
  • Ryleigh Fidler recorded her third-career double-double, and second on the season.
