Vincennes Wins One at Owens CC Tournament

Perrysburg, Ohio. -  The Vincennes University volleyball team took one of four matches over the weekend at the Owens CC Tournament in Perrysburg, OH.

The Trailblazers took down Mott CC in straight sets, 25-16, 25-8, 25-23. VU then fell to DII #2-ranked Parkland in four sets, 26-24, 20-25, 5-25, 15-25, on Friday Kellogg in four sets, 22-25, 25-16, 19-25, 23-25, and DII #9-ranked Grand Rapids in four sets, 20-25, 27-25, 15-25, 16-25, on Saturday.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Alison Smith (Oakland, Ill.) was the team leader in kills with 36 during the 4 game tournament, Smith also added 41 digs and a team-high 6 aces. Sophomore Ryleigh Fidler (Linton, Ind.) finished the tournament with 30 kills and 57 digs. Sophomore Grace Doane (Vincennes, Ind.) finished with 22 kills and Freshman Breanna Metzger (Tennyson, Ind.) finished with 10 kills, with Metzger adding a team-high 21 blocks and Doane finishing with 10 blocks. Sophomore Ryli Bobbitt (Sullivan, Ind.) finished the tournament with 17 kills, 5 aces and 18 blocks. Freshmen Savannah Grimes (Dieterich, Ill.) and Morgen Tinkle (Rockville, Ind.) led the Trailblazers in assists with 60 and 46 respectively throughout the tournament. Tinkle added 3 aces, and Grimes finished with 41 digs on the weekend. Sophomore Brantli Lannan (Linton, Ind.) led VU with 70 digs in the tournament and Sophomore Ariana Gentzler (Paxton, Ill.) finished with 5 blocks against Kellogg.

VU Coach Gary Sien says. . .
“Our first day overall went well as we competed very hard. Unfortunately, it did not last as we had a disappointing second day and we fell short of our typical high standards. We had a couple of good individual performances but obviously it was not enough. We are looking for a lot more consistent effort from the beginning to end of each match.”

Notes

  • Brantli Lannan is currently third in the nation in digs with 173 on the season.
  • Vincennes is currently ranked fifth in the country in digs with 600.
  • Vincennes is third in the country in blocks with 86 on the season.

Next up

The Trailblazers are back home this week when they host Brescia University on Wednesday Sept. 4th beginning at 7 pm eastern at the P.E. Complex. Vincennes is also hosting the Blazer Classic this weekend with their first match taking place on Friday Sept. 6th against John A. Logan at 3 pm eastern.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

NJCAA spring sport cancellation

The NJCAA announced on March 16 the cancellation of all spring sport competition and all upcoming basketball championships, effective immediately, due to the evolving COVID-19 situation. Spring competition includes all practices, regular season, postseason, and national championship play.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
