VU Baseball escapes with 3-2 win vs. Spoon River

The Vincennes University Baseball Team’s bats were as cold as the temperature Friday against visiting Spoon River, but the Trailblazers found a way to get a 3-2 win in a cold weather-shortened, seven-inning game. Although VU could manage only two hits against Snappers starter Ryan Taller, Spoon River allowed the Trailblazers to win in walk-off fashion on two consecutive Snapper errors.
Freshman Jordan Young went all seven innings for the Trailblazers to earn the win and improve to 3-2 on the season. Young gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits, while striking out four and walking one batter. Meanwhile, VU got only two singles (one each by sophomore shortstop Brad Hartman and sophomore designated hitter Chris Minks) off Taller, who also went the distance. However, the Snappers committed four errors, including the two late miscues that led to the Trailblazers’ victory.
VU (7-13) and Spoon River headed into the bottom of the seventh with the score tied at 2-2. Taller got two quick outs and VU sophomore center fielder Matt Volz then hit a ground ball to Snapper shortstop Jonah Saranglao. Saranglao’s throw was low and wide of first and Volz rounded first and advanced to second on the error. Up next was Trailblazer first baseman Jared Lauer, who hit another ground ball to Spoon River third baseman Shay Barbee. Barbee’s throw was also off the mark and the second consecutive throwing error allowed Volz to score the game-winner.
Young, pitching in a stiff wind and plummeting temperatures, was an escape artist a couple of times throughout the game. In the first, Spoon River got a one-out double from outfielder Matthew Blair-Brown and he advanced to a third on a sacrifice by first baseman Thomas Robertson. But Young got the next hitter to ground out to end the threat. In the sixth, Spoon River put a single and a base on balls together to try to start a rally. Young picked off the lead runner at second but a VU throwing error in the rundown after the Snapper base runner broke for third led to runners at second and third. However, the next hitter fouled out to Lauer to end the inning with no scoring. In the seventh, Spoon River had runners at first and second when Young induced another ground ball to short-circuit any chances of a Snapper run.
VU had scored its previous two runs in the fifth when the Trailblazers sent eight men to the plate and were aided to by two other Spoon River errors. Hartman led off the inning with a walk and Minks had VU’s first hit with a one-out single. Freshman outfielder Zach Norman rolled what looked like a double play ball to Saranglao who tossed the ball to second to try to force Minks and start the 4-6-3 twin-killing. However, Snapper second baseman Mitchell Zach dropped the throw and both Minks and Norman were safe as Hartman scored to get VU on the board. Trailblazer sophomore second baseman Kaleb Waller then hit another ground ball to Saranglao and he booted the ball to load the bases. Minks eventually scored VU’s second run on a passed ball by Spoon River catcher Austin Mannan.
VU returns to action Saturday at home with a doubleheader against Spoon River. First pitch is now set for 12:30 p.m.
On Sunday, the Trailblazers have a 1 p.m. twinbill vs. St. Joseph’s at Jerry Blemker Field and the homestand will continue on Monday with a 6 p,m. contest vs. visiting Wabash Valley. VU will play yet again on Tuesday at home as the Trailblazers host Sinclair in another doubleheader at 2 p.m., and the homestand wraps up Wednesday with a 6 p.m. game vs. Danville.
