VU Baseball falls at Wabash Valley in strange late-game slugfest

MT. CARMEL, Ill. - The Vincennes University Baseball Team's offense got off to a slow start Monday afternoon at Wabash Valley and fell behind 8-1 before battling back to turn the game into a slugfest. The host Warriors, however, had plenty left after VU's comeback and and answered VU's big mid-game innings with nine runs of their own to pull away from the Trailblazers and register an 18-10 win.

Sophomore Justin Kirkpatrick homered for VU and was 2-for-5 with a double as well. He was also hit by a pitch. Freshman Cade Luker finished the day 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, while freshman Dylan Collins was 2-for-3 with a double and freshman Mason Bruce had two hits in four at-bats, hitting a double and scoring twice.

The Trailblazers (24-21) were in a 9-5 deficit when Kirkpatrick came up to start the top of the eighth and deposited a homer over the left-center field fence. One out later, Luker doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Wabash Valley made a pitching change as Bruce came to the plate and Bruce greeted the new pitcher with VU's second double of the inning when he hit a sharp ground ball over the third base bag to score Luker and cut it to 9-8 Wabash Valley.

VU tied the game at 9-all when Bruce scored on the Warriors shortstop's error. The miscue came on VU freshman Lucas Fagg's groundball.

In the bottom half of the eighth, Wabash Valley loaded the bases and a one-out triple brought all three runners home to quickly make it 12-9 Warriors. When the dust cleared after the third out of the Wabash Valley half of the inning, the Warriors had scored nine times to go ahead 18-9 headed to the ninth.

Early in the ninth, it looked like VU might have another big inning. Sophomore Chandler Roberts singled and Kirkpatrick followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Sophomore Jared Lauer's sacrifice fly plated Roberts to make it 18-10 but that was all the Trailblazers could produce in the last inning.
