VU Baseball lights up scoreboard to take 3 of 4 during weekend of action at North Central, South Suburban

SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. - The Vincennes University Baseball Team claimed three out of four games over the weekend, scoring at least eight runs in each contest and posting double-digit runs in two of the games on the way to 42 runs on the weekend.

The Trailblazers (22-17) started the weekend action Friday night at North Central College and erupted for a 15-2 win before traveling to South Suburban for two games vs. the Saints and a third game against Kankakee. On Saturday, VU topped South Suburban by a score of 10-8 and then returned later to turn away Kankakee, 9-5. On Sunday, the Trailblazers fell to South Suburban, 12-8, in another slugfest.

VU vs. NORTH CENTRAL; FRIDAY (15-2 WIN)
The Trailblazers got the offense going early, posting six first inning runs, before adding a seventh in the second, plating five runs in the third and scoring three more in the sixth.

Sophomore shortstop Justin Kirkpatrick was 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored. Freshman Mason Bruce was also 2-for-3 with a double and freshman Cade Luker was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs.

VU vs. SOUTH SUBURBAN; SATURDAY (10-8 WIN)
On Saturday vs. South Suburban, VU put up big offensive numbers again as Kirkpatrick finished 3-for-3 with a triple, a double, a walk and three runs scored, while Bruce was 3-for-3 with a run and Zack Pate was 2-for-3 with a double, a base on balls and three runs scored.

The Trailblazers again scored early with three runs in the first inning. From there, VU scored consistently with pairs of runs in the second, fourth and sixth before recording the 10th and final run in the seventh frame.

VU vs. KANKAKEE; SATURDAY (9-5 WIN)
Later on Saturday vs. Kankakee, VU scored a run in the fifth inning to break a 4-4 tie, only to see Kankakee score again in the next inning to knot the game again. But the Trailblazers scored four more times in the sixth inning for the final margin of victory.

Sophomore Jared Lauer was 2-for-3 with a double and sophomore Brett Yeryar was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Sophomore Levi Archer also scored twice for VU.

VU vs. SOUTH SUBURBAN; SUNDAY (12-8 LOSS)
In Sunday's weekend wrap-up vs. South Suburban, Bruce clubbed a two-run home run to get the Trailblazers on the board in the first inning, sophomore Chandler Roberts hit a solo shot in the fourth and Lauer was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

But that wasn't nearly enough as the Saints scored nine of their 12 runs in the fifth inning as South Suburban came from behind and then pulled away for the win.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
