VU Baseball opens sub-district with 6-3 win over Cuyahoga; Young throws CG, Rojas and Minks homer

PARMA, Ohio – Vincennes University freshman Jordan Young went the distance and sophomores Alex Rojas and Chris Minks hit solo homers as part of the Vincennes University Baseball Team’s 6-3 win over host Cuyahoga earlier today in the opening game of the NJCAA Sub-District Tournament in Parma, OH.
The Trailblazers will face Owens in the next round. Owens defeated Lakeland (OH) in Game 2. VU and Owens are scheduled to get started at about 5:30 p.m. tonight. Freshman Bryant Jackson gets the ball for the Trailblazers in that contest.
Young scattered seven hits (including six singles) while striking one and walking two hitters over seven innings in the opener (all tournament games are seven innings). He also hit a batter.
While Young was keeping things in check on the mound, the Trailblazer batting order was giving him plenty of run support. Eight of nine VU hitters had at least one hit.
In addition to the solo bombs by Minks leading off the VU half of the second inning and Rojas in the fifth, freshman Matt Kunce had a double. Kunce, Rojas and freshman Lane Dransfield were each 2-for-3 on the day.
VU (25-23) trailed 2-1 early and went into the sixth tied 3-3 with the Challengers (36-19) when the Trailblazers broke it open with three runs. The scoring came when Kunce hit a one-out double and sophomore Matt Volz scored him with a single for the winning run. Dransfield followed with a hit to plate Volz and sophomore Jared Lauer provided the second insurance run with VU’s fourth consecutive hit.
Cuyahoga garnered two of its runs with three singles in the second inning. The Challengers’ other run came in the fifth on two singles, a double and an error.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
