VU Baseball's offense quieted in 11-4 setback at Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Vincennes University freshman Connor Pierce homered Friday for the Vincennes University Baseball Team but the problems that plagued the Trailblazers in their season-opening series last weekend at West Georgia Tech continued Friday when the VU lineup couldn't put together enough big innings and the pitching staff gave up 12 hits and eight bases on balls in an 11-4 defeat at Cleveland State.

The host Cougars got out to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings, partially powered by a pair of homers of VU freshman starter Jordan Young. The Trailblazers got to the Cleveland State starter, Michael Dike, for four runs but that was all the scoring VU (0-4) would do the rest of the way as two Cougar relievers blanked the Trailblazers for the final 3 2/3 innings. The Trailblazers were behind 7-4 in the sixth when Cleveland State added another run in the bottom of the frame and tacked on three more in the eighth to open up the final margin.

VU wound up with five hits. Cleveland State rapped out 12 hits. In addition to Pierce's 2-for-4 day with the homer and and two RBI, the Trailblazers got a run batted in from sophomore Alex Rojas and a double by freshman Lane Dransfield.

On the mound, Young went four innings, yielding seven runs (six earned) on eight hits while striking out four and walking two. Sophomore Colton Pittman came on in relief and gave up a run in two innings of two-hit work. Pittman also had a strikeout, gave up a base on balls and hit one batter. Sophomore Mitchell Lawson finished up for VU. He was touched for one hit while issuing five walks in two innings.

The Trailblazers return to the field Saturday at Cleveland State to face the Cougars in a doubleheader with the first pitch set for 11 a.m.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
