VU Baseball takes pair, 2-0 and 3-2, in doubleheader at Southern Union State

WADLEY, Ala. – Sophomore Grant Buckley threw a one-hit, complete game shutout over seven innings in the opener while freshman Lucas Fagg and sophomore Andrew Sparks combined to yield only two runs in the nightcap as the Vincennes University Baseball Team swept a doubleheader Monday at Southern Union State Community College in Wadley, AL.

The Trailblazers (9-8) claimed the victories by scores of 2-0 and 3-2.

The outstanding pitching performances got timely support when necessary from the VU batting order in each game.

While Buckley was holding the hosts’ bats in check with the one-hitter, sophomore Brett Yeryar and freshman Chandler Roberts drove in runs.

In the fifth Inning, with two outs, sophomore shortstop Justin Kirkpatrick was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Roberts’ single. In the sixth, the Trailblazers tacked on a run with three hits when freshman Mason Bruce singled. After sophomore Levi Archer’s hit, Yeryar plated Bruce with a single.

Archer drove in a pair of runs and sophomore Lane Dransfield had a RBI to help the Trailblazers squeeze out the second victory of the day.

On the mound, Fagg scattered five hits and struck out two hitters over four innings. Sparks then came on to hold Southern Union State to a pair of hits while striking out one during his three innings of work.

VU got its first runs of the second game with two outs in the fourth Inning when freshman Walter Baker, who had singled, and sophomore Austin Slover (via a walk) got on and Archer singled after both runners had advanced on a passed ball by the Southern Union catcher. In the fifth Inning – again with two outs – freshman Zack Pate singled and stole second. Dransfield then scored Pate with a second consecutive single for the Trailblazers.

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
