VU Baseball Team earns spot in NJCAA sub-district tournament championship

PARMA, Ohio – The Vincennes University Baseball Team won a pair of games Saturday to secure a spot in Sunday’s championship game of the NJCAA Region 12 Sub-District Tournament in Parma, OH.

The Trailblazers topped Lakeland (OH) by an 8-5 score early Saturday and then extracted some revenge Saturday afternoon by routing Owens, 12-0, after the Express had turned away VU in its second game of the tournament Friday night. VU (27-24) and Owens will now face each other for a third time in the title game.

In Saturday’s action…

VU vs. Lakeland

VU benefitted from sophomore Alex Rojas’ second home run of the tournament and sophomores Mitchell Lawson and Brad Hartman combining to keep Lakeland in check by scattering nine hits, striking out six and issuing two walks between them.

Rojas also had a double as part of his 2-for-2 day and he scored twice. In addition, sophomores Chris Minks and Jared Lauer rapped out a double each. Overall, six different VU hitters scored at least once and six Trailblazers had a RBI.

Lawson struck out four and walked two batters for the win. Hartman yielded two hits and fanned two batters.

VU vs. Owens

In the game that propelled the Trailblazers to the sub-district championship, Rojas had yet another big game with a triple and two doubles. He drove in a run and scored four times while going 3-for-3. Sophomore Matt Volz was 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBI while scoring two runs. Sophomore Jake Carey finished the game 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in. The Trailblazers’ 12-run outburst also included doubles by Hartman and freshman Connor Pierce.

As the Trailblazers were erupting for a dozen runs, Lauer was earning the victory by keeping the Express off the board. He gave up four hits and struck out two in the five-inning mound performance.

The VU starter for Sunday is to be announced.
