VU cross country teams post 25th place finishes at 15th Annual Greater Louisville Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Vincennes University runner Anais Da Silva finished 21st in the Women's 5K race and Trailblazer Jose Abel Cano was 53rd in the men's 8K meet earlier today as the VU Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams both registered 25th place team finishes at the 15th Annual Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.

Both VU teams were moved up a division this year and competed with faster fields of competition than in past years participating in the multi-division event, which is considered to be the largest cross country gathering in the nation this year. The Trailblazers' Blue Division was part of a meet with more than 130 colleges and universities from more than 25 states and Canada. The field included some of the nation's top collegiate programs (featuring 29 men's and 36 women's teams that are ranked in the NCAA Div. I, Div. II, Div. III and NAIA polls) and almost 3,000 runners overall.

Da Silva turned in a time of 18:41.01. Indiana Tech's Tiffany Rauch was the Blue Division's individual winner in 17:39.62, and Grand Valley State grabbed the team title, followed in the top 5 by Shawnee State, Taylor, Tennessee Tech and Roberts Wesleyan. The remaining top 10 women's teams (in order) were Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne, Lee, Lansing, Wheeling Jesuit and Indiana Tech.

Other individual finishers for VU in the women's race included Janeth Magana in 98th place with a time of 19:44.80. After Cano, who finished in 26:22.73, in the men's race for the Trailblazers were Evan Franklin in 112th with a time of 27:06.16, and Hunter Ingle in 131st place (27:18.86).

Grand Valley State also won the men's Blue Division team crown. GVSU was followed (in order) by Edinboro, Taylor, Indiana Tech, Shawnee State, Roberts Wesleyan, Kentucky, Madonna, Marian and Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
