VU Cross Country turns in top-10 finishes in season opener; Warren 11th, O’Shea 12th to lead Trailblazers

SHELBYVILLE – Vincennes University sophomores Adam Warren and Kelly O’Shea finished just outside the Top 10 in their respective races Saturday at the Franklin College Sodexo Grizzly Invitational. The top-15 performances led both Trailblazer teams to top-10 showings in their season openers as the VU women were fifth in their 5K race and the VU men finished seventh in their 8K meet.

Manchester Manchester won the team title in both races and Manchester’s Mariah Jordan claimed the women’s event in a time of 22:58.59. Fellow Manchester runner Alex Gudeman paced the field in the men’s race in 27:17.08.

O’Shea completed the course in 24:56.63. Warren turned in a time of 28:26.04.

Other VU competitors and their times Saturday included sophomore Chloe Heller’s 17th place performance in 26:05.43. Heller initially wasn’t going to use her second season of NJCAA cross country eligibility but decided to join the trailblazer women’s team less than a week ago.

The rest of the VU women were:

  • ·      Wendy Catalan (33rd place; 27:10.60),
  • ·      Toni Waddell (49th place; 28:44.10), and,
  • ·      Breanna Gahagan (65th place; 30:25.29).

Supporting Warren for the Trailblazer men were:

  • ·      Jaden Page (28th place; 29:27.09),
  • ·      Talen Taylor (29th place; 29:35.08),
  • ·      Josh Backes (40th place; 30:21.74).
  • ·      Tre’ Bower (49th place; 31:04.26),
  • ·      Brayden Little (51st place; 31:06.30),
  • ·      Eric Johnson (64th place; 31:45.97),
  • ·      Solomon Dillard-Rynard (74th place; 32:11.26), and,
  • ·      Nathan Dugger (79th place; 32:54.40).

VU will next be in action Sept. 18 at the Indiana Intercollegiate meet, hosted by Indiana State at the Laverne Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
