VU edged by WVC in 11-inning marathon contest

The Vincennes University Baseball Team locked up in a nearly-five-hour marathon game with Wabash Valley Tuesday at VU's Jerry Blemker Field and dropped a 15-11 decision after the visiting Warriors managed to score four times in the top of the 11th inning.

Originally scheduled as a doubleheader of two seven-inning contests, beginning at 4 p.m. Vincennes time, Game 1 stretched into the evening as both teams' pitching staffs labored and the batting orders took advantage. VU (3-12) was also victimized by five errors.

The Trailblazers had a chance to win the game in the seventh but a two-out error opened the door for WVC to tie the score. The Trailblazers, who had 13 hits, then found themselves in a four-run deficit in the 10th inning before loading the bases to knot it up again, only to see the Warriors pull out the win in the 11th.

Second baseman Jared Lauer was 4-for-6 and drove in three runs, while shortstop Brad Hartman was 3-for-5 with four RBI. Third baseman Lance Myers finished 3-for-6.

VU used seven pitchers in the slugfest, including freshman Austin Gossmann, who came into the game in the fifth inning and worked 4 1/3 innings of one-run (unearned) baseball, giving up two hits while striking out four and yielding no walks. Freshman Tyler Smith (0-1), who worked the 11th inning for VU, took the loss. Nathan Forrest started for the Trailblazers and was followed by Michael Chkiry, Zack Longnecker, Colton Pittman, Gossman, Grant Buckley and Smith.

The Trailblazers return to action at 4 p.m. Friday, hosting Lake Michigan at Jerry Blemker Field.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
