VU Golf continues to stretch lead after three rounds at NJCAA Div. III National Championship

CHAUTAUQUA, NY – The Vincennes University Golf Team took a major step Thursday toward its second NJCAA Div. III Golf National Championship when the Trailblazers continued to extend their lead after the national championship tournament’s third day.

VU stretched its advantage to 20 strokes Thursday, leading second place Minnesota State, 898-918, at the end of the day. The Trailblazers continued to get solid play from Jacob Bartley, who turned in a score of 71 for Thursday’s round (his scores so far are 74-74-71 for a three-round total of 219) and grabbed the top spot on the leaderboard. VU’s Joe Davis soared into a seventh place tie with a 71 of his own on Thursday. Davis’ three-round total is 224 (77-76-71).

Trailblazer Ian Weyer ended up in a tie for 11th (78-72-78 for a total score of 228), while Cameron Weyer (75-84-74 for a 233 total score) grabbed a share of 15th place. VU’s Blake Claycomb ended the day Thursday in a tie for 17th (77-80-77 for a total score of 234).

  • Jamestown; fourth; 936,
  • Madison; fifth; 952,
  • Monroe; sixth; 958,
  • Sandhills; seventh; 974,
  • Anne Arundel; eighth; 975,
  • Bucks County; ninth; 996,
  • Nassau; 10th; 999,
  • Camden County; 11th; 1009, and,
  • Community College of Rhode Island; 12th; 1015.

Play concludes Friday with the final round. If VU can maintain the lead, the Trailblazers will claim their second NJCAA Div. III national title. The program’s first national crown came in 2013.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
