VU Golf in Tight Race After Day 1 of Rend Lake Invite

Ina, IL – After 1 day of play at Rend Lake College the VU Golf team currently sits in 5th place with 320 points, but is only 7 strokes out of 3rd place, and 15 strokes out of 1st.

Windy conditions and a slow start put the Trailblazers behind early, but once they got hot, they got really hot. Conditions really effected all team’s as Coach Chattin indicated that even Rend Lake, the home host, seemed to be bothered by the extremely windy conditions. However, he admitted that again, had VU not got off to such a slow start, they could have easily finished the first day of play in the top 3.

Red Hills High School alum Zach Breault was the low-man for the Trailblazers after the first day of play at Rend Lake with a score of 77. He would be followed closely by Vincennes native Blake Claycomb with 78, and freshman Keegan McCullough continued a strong freshman campaign by being the 3rd lowest Blazer with a score of 80. Tanner Gray & Cody Weber would round out the scoring for VU with 85 & 87 respectively.

Coach Chattin said after the first day of play, “Again, we got off to a slow start. I think it was the wind, because even Rend Lake, the host, seemed to be bothered by the adverse conditions. We have proven time and time again that we rebound well, and we always make-up for the slow start on day 1 in the 2nd half of the tournament. The course was also very wet, and that caused some shots to land awkwardly, and our guys to really struggle on the greens. Again though, those conditions seemed to affect everyone. The lowest score shot today was a 72, on a par 70 course. Tomorrow is a new day, and I fully expect us to rebound on day 2.”

The Trailblazers will return to action tomorrow at the Rend Lake Invite at Franklin County Club! Go VU!

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
