VU men claim Region 12 Cross Country title, women 2nd; Evan Franklin's win keys highlight-filled day

LANSING, Mich. - The Vincennes University Men’s Cross Country Team turned in an historic upset victory Saturday in winning the NJCAA Region 12 Championships and ending Lansing Community College’s streak of 19 consecutive Region 12 team titles.
EVAN FRANKLIN
Both the VU men and the Trailblazer women - who finished second in their race - earned trips to the NJCAA National Championship Meet, which will be hosted by Butler Community College in the Eldorado, KS. The VU men edged Lansing and Grand Rapids to claim the title. Individually, VU freshman Evan Franklin finished first in a time of 26:29. Joining Franklin in earning All-Region honors were Jose Cano-Pallares, who was runner-up; Janzen Franklin, who came in fourth, and Hunter Ingle with a ninth place finish.
VU Coach Chris Gafner said after the meet, “I am extremely proud of the effort we put forth today. The men broke what was probably the longest streak in NJCAA Cross Country. Taking home the win, when we came in ranked third, was a huge upset and it took a total team effort to pull it off, which made it even more special.”
ANAIS DA SILVA
On the women’s side, Anais Da Silva led all VU runners with a fourth place finish to earn All-Region honors in leading VU to second place. Joining Da Silva on the All-Region Team honors were Trailblazers Janeth Magana, Nacketa Scanlon and Sydney Davidson, who finished 10th, 11th and 12th, respectively. “The women had a very strong showing against a very tough team in Lansing, who is the defending National Champions, Gafner said. “Having four women finish All-Region was a huge accomplishment, especially with our team not being 100 percent healthy.”
In addition to the outstanding running performances Saturday, Gafner was named the Region 12 Men’s Coach of the Year, his second consecutive year earning the award.
CHRIS GAFNER
Both VU squads return to action Nov. 12 at the NJCAA National Cross Country Championships.
