VU men, women track teams both among Top 10 in nation; Trailblazer performances highlighted by 3 national titles, several top 10 individual efforts

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Once the weather allowed competition to resume Saturday night at the NJCAA Outdoor National Track & Field Championships, the Vincennes University Track & Field Teams saw freshman Candela Guijarro battle her way to a third place tie in the Women’s High Jump and sophomore TaPring Goatee turn in a top-10 finish in the Women’s 5000 Meter Run.

The top 10s and freshman Trey Kennedy’s Pole Vault national championship earlier in the day, plus national titles by Goatee (Steeplechase) and sophomore Kaitlyn Moricz (Pole Vault) and other top 10s earlier in the meet, helped the Trailblazer men finish eighth and the VU women 10th in the nation.

“It was obviously a very successful meet,” VU Coach Chris Gafner said. “This was the first national meet I have coached where three different Trailblazers won national titles. We definitely outperformed our expectations.”

Guijarro jumped 5 feet, 5.25 inches, to share third place behind winner Kaysee Pilgrim of Pima, who lept 5 feet, 7.75 inches.

Goatee followed up her Steeplechase title with Saturday’s eighth place performance in the 5000 Meter Run. Her time was 18:41.09, while Lydia Mato of Barton County won in 16:39.37.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
