VU remains unbeaten with 77-67 win over Southwestern Illinois

BELLEVILLE, Ill. - The NJCAA No. 1-ranked Vincennes University Men's Basketball Team weathered yet another upset effort by an opponent Saturday when the Trailblazers fought off a second half run by host Southwestern Illinois in Belleville, IL, for a 77-67 win over the Blue Storm.
The victory moved VU to 17-0 on the season and kept the Trailblazers atop the NJCAA District 16 standings as sophomore guard Everett Clemons scored 20 points, handed out five assists, pulled down six rebounds and registered a pair of steals. VU also got double-double performances from sophomore A.J. Patty (13 points, 13 rebounds) and freshman Makur Puou (13 points, 11 rebounds).
The Trailblazers led 42-34 at halftime, but SWIC (10-5) tightened up their defensive effort and executed better in the first eight minutes of the second half to cut the VU lead to 51-50 at the 11:40 mark. After tying the game on a free throw, the Blue Storm pulled ahead, 53-51, on a goal-tending call against the Trailblazers.
The SWIC lead, however, was short-lived as VU sophomore Charles Foster knocked down a trey to put the Trailblazers back in front, 54-53, and the Trailblazers outscored the Blue Storm 19-11 over the next nine minutes to the lead back near the double-digit range. From there, VU maintained the lead to grind out the win.
VU will be idle until Jan. 17 when the Trailblazers head to Southeastern Illinois in Harrisburg, IL. The Trailblazers will take on the Falcons at about 4 p.m. ("Vincennes time") after the VU women face Southeastern Illinois at about 2 p.m.
