VU routs Olney Central, 12-0, behind Slover, Dransfield homers and Lauer CG

OLNEY, Ill. - The Vincennes University Baseball Team used a grand slam home run by sophomore Austin Slover and a pair of solo homers by sophomore Lane Dransfield, plus a complete game pitching performance by sophomore Jared Lauer, to rout host Olney Central, 12-0, Tuesday night in Olney, IL.

The Trailblazers (23-17) roughed up five Olney Central pitchers for 11 hits and put together two consecutive big innings while Lauer fought his way out of a pair of bases-loaded jams to finish off the Blue Knights.

Slover's grand slam came in the five-run seventh inning when VU batted around for the second straight time and made the final result a no-doubter. Dransfield's initial roundtripper Tuesday was a second inning, leadoff shot that accounted for the Trailblazers' first run. His second homer was a two-out, solo blast that sparked a rally in the sixth inning.

In addition to Slover's 2-for-2, six-RBI, two-runs-scored performance and Dransfield's 3-for-4 day that included three runs scored and another three driven in, sophomore Justin Kirkpatrick was 2-for-4. Sophomore Collin Wirth had VU's other RBI.

On the mound, Lauer gave up only four hits while striking out five hitters over seven innings.

VU was up 2-0 when Dransfield deposited his second homer down the right field line with two outs in the sixth. Freshman outfielder Walter Baker followed with a walk and sophomore Chandler Roberts was called on to run for Baker at first. After Roberts stole second, Wirth singled to plate Roberts with the fourth run. Wirth advanced to third the easy way on an Olney Central passed ball and a wild pitch before freshman Lucas Fagg was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners. Slover entered the game as a pinch hitter and then singled to bring Wirth and Fagg home, and Slover later scored on an error when Kirkpatrick's grounder got through the Blue Knights second baseman. When the dust cleared, the Trailblazers had sent nine men to the plate.

In the seventh, freshman third baseman Mason Bruce led off with a double and moved to third on a fly ball by freshman Zack Pate. Dransfield brought Bruce home and Roberts kept the inning going with a base hit of his own. With two outs, Fagg drew a base on balls to load them up before Slover drove a pitch out to right-center for four more runs and the final score of 12-0.

VU returns to action Wednesday in hosting Rose-Hulman at 6 p.m. at Jerry Blemker Field.

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
