The Trailblazers will be in meet action for the first time since the Sept. 18 Indiana Intercollegiate Meet in Terre Haute.

In that event, sophomore Kelly O’Shea finished 35th, the VU women (who are ranked in the NJCAA Top 25) were 11th out of 19 teams and the Trailblazer men finished 15th out of 19 squads.

The Greater Louisville Classic is considered one of the best meets in this part of the country (featuring NCAA No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 6 Iowa State this year), but it’s also one of the most unique events in all of cross country. Ranging from outstanding NCAA competitors to top-level elementary-age athletes – with every age in between – the meet provides interesting storylines. The youngsters’ race was added to the event last year, and the high school and middle school races will be run after the college races conclude.

The team list for the meet includes more than 2,700 athletes (28 men’s teams and 30 women’s teams) from 118 colleges and universities from 23 states and Canada. It is believed to be the second largest collegiate meet in the United States this year.

Also, many top college teams use the meet as a course preview for the NCAA D-I National Championships, which will be hosted at Tom Sawyer Park this season and again in 2017.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
