VU's Hunter Schuman to take throwing skills to Indiana State next year

Vincennes University sophomore Hunter Schuman will continue his collegiate track & field career at Indiana State in Terre Haute, IN, next year.

The product of John Glenn High School in Walkerton, IN, signed his national letter of intent with the Sycamores as his parents Tammy Schuman and Ric Moore looked on. VU Coach Chris Gafner and Trailblazers Assistant Coach Tim Marsee were also present.

Schuman is looking at competing at the NCAA level with ISU as he continues with the final stages of a solid, consistent NJCAA throwing career with VU in the shot put, discus, hammer and weight throw.

He said he decided on the Sycamores as his next collegiate destination because ISU features, “a really good throwing team” and the Missouri Valley Conference-member school’s track & field squad is already the home of some of his friends from the throwing community.

“We go against a bunch of really good competition here at VU,” he added, “but I like the way ISU schedules and takes on a very high level of competition. I hope to hit national marks at that level and place someday at (the NCAA) nationals.”

Gafner believes Schumann has the talent and mental attributes to excel at the next level.

“Hunter has worked extremely hard throughout his time at VU to consistently improve his marks and get more and more out of his abilities,” he said. “He has approached his responsibilities, both individually and with Coach Marsee, in a very serious way and the results show it. Even with that, I think he still has potential to get even better at the next level and we’ll look forward to following his progress like we keep up with others who have earned a chance to compete at the NCAA level.”

In the shot put, Schuman posted a personal best mark of 50 feet, 3.5 inches, in indoor competition on Feb. 19 at Eastern Illinois. He registered an effort of 49 feet, 5.75 inches, in outdoor throwing at the 2015 NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. In the discus, Schuman’s top VU effort has been 128 feet, 11 inches, at the 2015 Indiana Little State Championships.

In addition, Schuman turned in Trailblazer throws of 168 feet, one-half inch, in the hammer and 55 feet, 1.5 inches, in the weight throw.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
