VU’s Kuhn, Murphy, Spitz land NJCAA superior academic achievement honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Recent Vincennes University graduates Ariana Kuhn, Robert Murphy and Meredith Spitz were among the student-athletes on the list of 2014-15 NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Award winners, which was released Wednesday from the NJCAA’s headquarters in Colorado Springs, CO.
This year saw a record 1,936 student-athletes from 324 NJCAA-member colleges earn national academic honors.
A record 3.31 percent of individuals competing in NJCAA sports qualified for an academic award, which is only available to student-athletes who accumulated at least 45 semester credit hours or 60 quarter credit hours with a minimum of a 3.60 grade-point average.
Below are the three NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards, with the qualifying grade-point average for each honor:
·    Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence: 4.00 GPA
·    Superior Academic Achievement Award: 3.80-3.99 GPA
·    Exemplary Academic Achievement Award: 3.60-3.79 GPA
Kuhn, Murphy and Spitz landed Superior Academic Achievement Awards. Kuhn and Murphy competed for the VU Track & Field Teams. Murphy and Spitz ran cross country for the Trailblazers.
Coffeyville claimed the most accolades with 35 student-athletes gaining recognition.

Formerly known as NJCAA Academic All-America honors, the NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards program has annually recognized the academic success of the association’s student-athletes since the program’s inception in 1983.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
