VU Track & Field sees 2 more school records, 7 national qualifying marks at UIndy's indoor Indianapolis Challenge

INDIANAPOLIS - It was another very fruitful trip to the University of Indianapolis over the weekend for the VU Track & Field Teams as the Trailblazers saw two more VU school records fall and seven more qualifying marks were registered for the NJCAA Indoor National Champiionship Meet.

Freshmen Anais Da Silva and Jordan Moothery set the new VU standards. Da Silva's winning time of 18:06.37 broke the former Trailblazer 5000 Meter Run record and also placed her second on the NJCAA national list in that event. Moothery turned in a time of 6.84 seconds in the 60 Meter Dash to claim that VU record.

Both of those performances qualified for the March 4 and 5 NJCAA Indoor National Championship Meet in Winston-Salem, NC. Other VU competitors who punched their ticket to the national championship meet over the weekend were:
Jose Cano Pallares: 1000 Meter Run (2:34.80; First Place),
Kelly O'Shea: One Mile Run (5:17.90),
Adam Warren: 3000 Meter Run (8:57.31),
Jordan Downs: Pole Vault (4.20 Meters), and,
Richard Griffith: Heptathlon (4,356 points).

"Anais had a great 5-thousand meters (run), and it was her first time racing that distance," said VU Coach Chris Gafner. "She handled it very well and just edged her competition for first place. It was great to see Jose (Cano Pallares) get his first collegiate victory. He ran a smart race and left the competition in the last lap of the 1-thousand meters."

Gafner went on to point out that Warren's peformance in the 3000 Meter Run was a "breakthrough" effort, while Griffith's debut in the Heptathlon was a very positive sign - especially since Griffith should only get better as he masters more Heptathlon events. Finally, gafner said, freshman Varvara Klyuchnikova improved her NJCAA national top mark with a winning height of 1.75m in the High Jump and sophomore Trey Kennedy turned in his best Pole Vault effort of the season at 4.80m for a victory.

VU will next head to the Grand Valley State Big Meet on Feb. 12 and 13 in Allendale, MI, and close out the indoor regular season at the Feb. 19 Eastern Illinois Friday Night Special in Charleston, IL.

He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
