VU Trailblazer Volleyball preparing for test in 4 weekend matches at Parkland

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Vincennes University Volleyball Team heads into what figures to be its toughest stretch of the 2015 schedule this weekend as the Trailblazers (6-5) travel to Parkland College in Champaign, IL, for the Cobra Classic.

The good news for the still-evolving young Trailblazers is that they won’t face the host Cobras, who are undefeated at 19-0 and ranked No. 1 among NJCAA Div. II programs. The bad news this weekend is that VU is scheduled to take on three NJCAA Top 10 programs and a fourth that has suffered only three setbacks so far in 2015.

The Trailblazers, who have won three straight matches, are scheduled to take the court against fourth-ranked Lincoln Land (12-1) at 11:45 a.m. Friday. Up next for VU will be No. 3 Johnson County (11-1) at 1:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Trailblazers will take on eighth-ranked De Moines Area (8-1) at 12:30 p.m. and wrap up their stay at Parkland with a 4 p.m. match vs. Southwestern Illinois (9-3), which received votes in this week’s NJCAA Div. II poll.

Besides VU’s opponents, the field at Parkland includes No. 7 Owens, No. 10 McHenry, No. 11 Kirkwood, No. 14 Illinois Central and NJCAA D-III No. 5 Rock Valley.

The Trailblazers will depart from Vincennes at 7:15 a.m. Friday. Players’ families and others who make the trip to Champaign for the VU matches can locate the Parkland campus, via Google Maps, with the physical address of 2400 W. Bradley Ave., Champaign, IL 61821.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
