VU Trailblazers drop game to SWIC to snap 12-game winning streak

The Vincennes University Men's Basketball Team saw its 12-game winning streak end Wednesday night when Southwestern Illinois ground out a 72-68 win over the Trailblazers at the VU P.E. Complex.

Freshman Jeremiah Bell led VU with 16 points and sophomore Justin King added 10. Southwestern Illinois forward Chris Galbreath scored a game-high 21.

VU (14-4) led 36-34 at halftime but Galbreath took command early in the second half to help the Blue Storm engage the NJCAA 17th-ranked Trailblazers in a back-and-forth game that featured six ties and 14 lead changes.

The Trailblazers and Blue Storm were tied at 58-all late in the game, but Southwestern Illinois won the battle of the boards (36-30) and did enough at the free throw line to open up a seven-point lead in the closing seconds. VU was victimized by mediocre free throw shooting. The Trailblazers were 21-of-34 at the stripe, including 10 misses in the first half. VU also shot a less-than-stellar 36 percent from the floor (5-of-16 in 3-pointers).

VU will host Lake Land at 7 p.m. Saturday and then head to Shawnee in Ullin, IL, on Wednesday, Jan. 20.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
