VU Trailblazers win 18th behind Puou's double-double, Hansen's 5 treys

CENTRALIA, Ill. - The Vincennes University Men's Basketball Team got back on the winning side of the scoreboard Saturday with a 73-61 victory at Kaskaskia. The Trailblazers (18-5) got out in front of the Blue Devils (14-7) early and weathered a Kaskaskia run before returning the lead to double digits and maintaining the advantage the rest of the way. VU led 31-25 at halftime.

VU benefitted from a double-double of 12 points and 17 rebounds from sophomore Makur Puou, as well as freshman Nate Hansen's five 3-pointers. Hansen finished with 17 points off the bench to lead four Trailblazers in double figures in scoring. Freshman Jeremiah Bell scored 12 and freshman Jordan Manse came off the bench to contribute 11.

In addition to Hansen's five treys, Manse knocked down three and Bell and freshman Theo Holloway hit one each to give the Trailblazers 10 (10-for-30; 33 percent) from beyond the arc. VU shot 24-for-55 (43.6 percent) from the floor overall. The 3-pointers turned out to be important as the Trailblazers shot 15-for-21 at the free throw line.

VU returns home to host Southeastern Illinois at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. That game - in which the VU men are preceded by the Trailblazer women vs. visiting Southeastern Illinois - will be part of VU's annual Play4Kay event to generate awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research.

From there, the Trailblazers will host Lewis & Clark at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, at the VU P.E. Complex and then make a Feb. 10 trip to John A. Logan in Carterville, IL, followed by a shorter trip to Robinson, IL, to face Lincoln Trail on Feb. 13.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
