VU Volleyball posts straight-sets win over visiting Rend Lake, 25-20, 25-15, 25-11

The Vincennes University Volleyball Team overcame some early serving difficulties to claim the opening set then and maintained command throughout much of the final two sets Tuesday night to post a straight-sets victory over visiting Rend Lake at the VU P.E. Complex.

The Trailblazers (21-3) grabbed the win by scores of 25-20, 25-15, 25-11.

VU was paced by sophomore Lindsay Persico's 11 kills, freshman Cali Topolski's 15 assists and freshman Hannah Bullock's 11 digs. In addition, the Trailblazers got seven blocks and and five kills from sophomore Jordan Sprinkle while freshman Genesis Milisde had five kills, freshman Abby Bigler finished with six digs and sophomore Kassidie Hayes turned in five blocks. The first set was neck-and-neck until VU scored four straight points to create some breathing room at 16-9. The Trailblazers then weathered a mini-run by the Warriors that tightened the set to 22-19 VU on the way to a 25-20 win.

In Set No. 2, VU scored eight consecutive points on a couple Hayes kills and a couple more by Milisde to key the run. The third set saw the Trailblazers lead by as much as a 23-9 cushion and never let up.

VU will now head to the Wallace State Fall Bash on Friday and Saturday in Hanceville, Ala., for four matches. The Trailblazers are scheduled to meet host Wallace State at 12 p.m. Noon and Gadsden State at 2 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, the event's itinerary calls for VU to take on Catawba Valley at 8 a.m. and Faulkner State at 12 p.m. Noon.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
