VU receives votes in latest NJCAA Div. I Volleybal Rankings

When the latest NJCAA Div. I Volleyball Rankings were released today, the Vincennes University Volleyball Team was sitting among programs that received votes for the poll.
Head Coach Gary Sien, Assistant Coach Mike Misner and the Trailblazers had hoped to find the Trailblazers in the Top 20 but being in the "Received Votes" slot shows movement toward a nationally-ranked position early in VU's first Division I season.
The top four teams in today's poll held onto their spots fr
om last week's first regular-season rankings. They are:
1. Western Nebraska, 2. Southern Idaho, 3. Polk State, and 4. Iowa Western.
Missouri State-West Plains moved up one slot to take over fifth place. Wallace State, which was No. 18 last week before being upset by VU in Vincennes on Sept. 8, fell out of the rankings this week.
The Trailblazers were hopeful that they had earned a spot in the Top 20 after posting four wins over nationally ranked opponents in the young 2016 campaign.
Still, Sien was pleased with the Trailblazers' ascension into the national picture in any way.
"This is huge for a program that is about four weeks into being a Div. I program," he said. "As long as we keep it going, this a huge step for us. I'm very happy about this news."
Mineral Area had received votes in the NJCAA’s preseason and Week 1 polls but VU bested the Cardinals two days after upsetting Wallace State. Both Wallace State and Mineral Area were undefeated when VU topped them.
The Trailblazers also own victories over NJCAA Div. II No. 5 Owens (on its own floor) and previous No. 20 Grand Rapids. Owens actually moved up a spot to fifth this week after losing to VU.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
