VU Women's Basketball drops 63-60 decision to WVC in district championship

INA, Ill. — Freshman guard Brooke Dossett had a career-high 23 points for the No. 2 seeded Vincennes University Women's Basketball Team Saturday in the Trailblazers' 63-60 loss to top seed Wabash Valley College in the championship game of the NJCAA Women's Basketball District P Tournament at Rend Lake College in Ina, IL, as the VU women saw a first half lead evaporate and VU then battled back from a second half deficit to see the comeback fall just short.
Sophomore Tasia Brewer had 13 points for the Trailblazers.
VU (29-4) led by nine at one point in the first half and was clinging to a 29-28 lead late in the initial 20 minutes. But WVC 3-point specialist Ellie Fruit hit her first trey of the game to send the Warriors to a 31-29 halftime lead. Dossett had 11 and Brewer eight for the Trailblazers in the first half. The teams played almost even over the first six minutes of the second half, but the Warriors then went on a 7-2 run to lead 47-41 with 11:45 to play. At that point, VU called timeout. After the timeout, Brewer scored for the Trailblazers and Wabash Valley committed two straight turnovers to give the Trailblazers the ball and a chance to cut deeper into the lead. But VU missed a shot and then the Warriors missed a shot but hauled in the offensive rebound for another bucket.
Dossett scored again to keep the Trailblazers close at 49-45, however yet another WVC offensive rebound led to the Warriors' 6-3 forward Desiree Rhodes scoring again to make it 51-45 Warriors.
The Trailblazers would never lead the rest of the way, but Dossett's last trey of the game at the 1:28 mark made it 61-58 WVC. In the closing seconds, Dossett had a look at another 3-pointer that would have tied the game at 63-63 but the shot was slightly off the mark and a jump ball on the rebound went to Wabash Valley on the alternating possession. From there, the Warriors ran out the clock on VU.

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
