VU Women's Basketball escapes with 65-64 win over Three Rivers

Sophomore Kyra Tucker scored six late points to help key the Vincennes University Women's Basketball Team engineer a comeback from 13 points down to visiting Three Rivers Monday night and VU squeezed out a 65-64 win over the Lady Raiders.

VU (20-4) trailed the entire game, until Tucker drained a 3-pointer and then scored on a layup to tie the game at 64-all after freshman Lauren Pickett penetrated and dished off. Tucker put the Trailblazers ahead by the final score when she hit 1-of-2 from the free throw line with 11 seconds remaining.

The Trailblazers escaped when the Lady Raiders (11-13) failed to get a clear look at the rim on their final trip down the floor.

Freshman Marley Miller led VU with 16 points. Tucker finished with 13 and Pickett added 11, while sophomore Brooke Dossett chipped in with nine points. Three Rivers' Michael Everhart tied Miller for high-game scoring honors with 16. The Lady Raiders' Camdyn McDaniel scored 12.

VU struggled shooting the ball throughout the contest. As a result, the Trailblazers scored only nine points in the second quarter to fall behind 34-23 at halftime. Things got slightly better after the break as VU hit 15-of-35 (5-of-15 beyond the arc) from the floor in the final two periods help outscore Three Rivers, 42-30, and get into position to steal the victory.

The Trailblazers were 25-of-72 (34 percent) from the floor overall and hit only six of 26 attempts from 3-point range (23 percent), while Three Rivers canned nine treys. In addition, VU hit only 9-of-18 at the free throw stripe.

The Trailblazers' scare was also based on Three Rivers' 39-35 rebounding advantage.

VU returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Southeastern Illinois at 5 p.m. That game - followed by the VU men vs. Southeastern Illinois - will be part of VU's annual Play4Kay event to generate awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research. The VU women will then make a Feb. 10 trip to John A. Logan in Carterville, IL, followed by a shorter trip to Robinson, IL, to face Lincoln Trail on Feb. 13.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
