VU Women’s Basketball Rolls past Schoolcraft in Final Game of Cincinnati State Classic

Cincinnati, OH – Stifling defense was the key to another lopsided victory by the Lady Trailblazers Basketball team in its second and last game at the Cincinnati State Classic on Saturday afternoon.

In the first three quarters of the game VU allowed: 13 points, 6 points, and 7 points. The Trailblazers managed to have a commanding lead of 57 -19 at the half and stretched that lead even more so by the end of the third, as VU lead 85-26.  The Trailblazers would drop into a zone defense, and coast to the final buzzer from there.

Vincennes was led by several strong performances on the night; however, the standout performance came from sophomore Jeanier Olukemi. Olukemi recorded a double-double with 27 points and 11 steals, off of 13-15 shooting from the field. Fellow Blazer sophomore Laurhen Pickett added 20 points on 9 of 10 shooting, while freshman Ladellia Maggett scored 10 points, and dished out five assits.

Coach Harry Meeks raved about how well his team competed defensively from wire to wire.  “Team rebounding was very good as we out-rebounded Schoolcraft 36-17. Overall, our defense was outstanding”.

VU Women’s Basketball takes to action again on Monday in its home opener at the VU P.E. Complex against Lindsey Wilson College at 7:00 p.m.

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
