VU Women’s Basketball signs Bloomfield star Kylee Shelton

VINCENNES, Ind. – Vincennes University’s Women’s basketball program has a history of finding talent locally and this tradition continues with the signing of Kylee Shelton from nearby Bloomfield High School.

“I knew about Kylee from watching the scores of games and hearing people talk about this girl up at Bloomfield,” Hall of Fame Women’s Basketball coach Harry Meeks said. “I think this is a great place for her. She can run, jump, shoot and she has great size for a guard. She has all the tools to be a very good college basketball player”

“I’m looking forward to having her on our team,” Meeks added. “One thing that excites me about her is that she loves to shoot the ball.”

Shelton is coming off her junior season which was cut short due to injuries, allowing her to only play in 11 games. But in the 10 full games that she was able to play last season Shelton averaged 21.4 points per game for the Lady Cardinals, including a 42-point scoring outburst that came after being named District Player of the Week by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

A two-sport star at Bloomfield, Shelton also garnered recognition for her play on the volleyball court as well, earning All-County and All-Conference honors in both basketball and volleyball along with being a 2020 Academic All-State honoree by the Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association.

“I chose Vincennes University because throughout the entire recruiting process they made me feel like I was already a part of a family,” Shelton said. “I respect Coach Meek’s values and expectations. He’s determined and has big goals and I can’t wait to be a part of them. Not only did I love the campus and the basketball program, but I know they have excellent academic programs.”

The Lady Trailblazers have won at least 20 games in each of the past seven seasons and 11 times in the past 12 years, finishing with 29 wins in 2015 and 2016. Shelton hopes to contribute to the winning ways at VU.

“I’m looking forward to making myself better as a player and creating a special bond with the players and coaches,” Shelton added. “I want the team to be very successful and accomplish as much as possible.”

Shelton would go on to add that staying local was pretty important for her, as it gives her family and friends an opportunity to come watch her play at the next level.

The VU Athletic Department welcomes Kylee Shelton to the 2021 recruiting class and wishes her well as she and her teammates finish the 2020-21 basketball season.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
