VU Women’s Basketball team tops Olney Central, 79-57, behind five in double figures in scoring

The Vincennes University Women’s Basketball Team improved to 7-0 on the season with a 79-57 victory Tuesday night over Olney Central at the VU P.E. Complex.

Freshman Chelsea Bentley scored 14 points off the bench to lead five Trailblazers in double figures in scoring. Freshman Jeanier Olukemi and sophomore Nicole Dodd both had 13 points, while freshman Jesheon Cooper had 12 and sophomore Anais Kirvan finished with 10 points.

Olukemi had nine rebounds while Cooper and Kirvan both pulled down eight boards each. That helped the Trailblazers hold a 50-36 advantage on the boards.

VU led 38-26 at halftime and Olukemi scored 11 of her points and Dodd totaled 10 of hers after halftime as the Trailblazers pulled away in the second half for the victory.

The Trailblazers will return to action on Dec. 1 when they travel to Lindsey Wilson in Columbia, KY. VU will then head to Lincoln Trail on Dec. 3 in Robinson, IL, for the first of two games that night. The women will tip off at 6:30 p.m. (Vincennes time) and the VU men will follow at about 8:30 p.m.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
