VU women’s Cross Country 15th at Greater Louisville Classic event; Trailblazer men run best race of season

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In its coach’s opinion, the Vincennes University Men’s Cross Country Team ran its best race of the season and the VU women’s squad earned 15th place out of 44 teams at Saturday’s Greater Louisville Classic.

Coach Chris Gafner said the VU women’s showing was more than acceptable and good enough that he believes the Trailblazer ladies could have edged the nation’s seventh-ranked NJCAA squad Saturday on the Tom Sawyer State Park course.

“The (VU) men ran, by far, their best race of the year; I was happy with both races,” Gafner said. “We were very close to Macomb (which finished 12th Saturday) on the women's side and they’re ranked seventh nationally. We didn't have Toni Waddell because of an injury and, with her in the race, we would have had a good chance to beat them.”

Alabama State won the women’s 5K Silver Race. The men’s 8K Silver Race was claimed by the Indiana University Running Club.

Sophomore Kelly O’Shea paced the VU women and finished 26th (19:35.92). In the men’s race (in which VU was 22nd out of 42 teams), sophomore Josh Backes led the Trailblazers with a 75th place performance (27:44.85).

The rest of the VU women and their performances on Saturday were:

Sophomore Chloe Heller                                        54th (20:05.23),
Freshman Wendy Catalan                                        91st (20:27.78),
Freshman Jana Magana                                        98th (20:31.98), and,
Sophomore Breanna Gahagan                            304th (23:26.96).

Behind Backes, the VU men stacked up as follows:

Sophomore Adam Warren                                        76th (27:45.14),
Freshman Talen Taylor                                        108th (28:13.23),
Freshman Jaden Page                                        159th (28:50.45),
Sophomore Eric Johnson                                        210th (29:37.59),
Sophomore Nathan Dugger                                221st (29:47.13),
Freshman Tre Bower                                            259th (30:28.53),
Freshman Solomon Dillard-Rynard                    286th (31:11.42), and,

Freshman Brayden Little                              293rd (31:24.23).

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
