VU Women’s Hoops Moves to 9-1 Record after Tough Road Win at Kaskaskia

Kaskaskia, IL – Riding a 5 game winning streak where they beat all the teams they faced by an average of nearly 37 points, the Lady Trailblazers basketball team came into Kaskaskia on a hot streak, and managed to continue their string of impressive games with an 83-74 win on the road Wednesday night.

The lady trailblazers got off to a slow start, only managing to score 9 points in the first quarter, and trailed the Blue Angels by a score of 22-9. Despite ramping up their offensive efficiency, and managing to score 24 points in the second quarter, VU still found themselves in a 6 point hole going into half-time, trailing 39-33.

However, VU came out with great fire and intensity in the third quarter. On the back of excellent team basketball, and a great showing of ball movement, VU outscored Kaskaskia 30-21 in the 3rd quarter, and took a 63-60 lead into the final quarter of play.

In the 4th VU fought a steep battle of exchanging buckets to start the quarter, but pulled away with an 83-74 win against a Kaskaskia team that was 4-1 on the year, and had several impressive early season wins on their schedule.

Leading the way for the Trailblazers in scoring, assits, and steals was Freshman Ladellia Maggett. Maggett tallied 32 points, dished out 7 assits, and poked away 7 steals on the night. Other impressive performance for VU were Sophomore Laurhen Pickett pulling down a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Sophomore Milana Matias who added 15 points.

The Vincennes University women’s basketball team returns to action Saturday night at 7:00 p.m., at the VU P.E. Complex, against Rend Lake!

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
