VU women’s tournament stay ends with 66-51 setback by Salt Lake

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 19 seed Vincennes University Women’s Basketball Team dropped a 66-51 decision to third seeded Salt Lake Wednesday at the NJCAA Div. I Women’s Basketball National Championship Tournament in Lubbock, TX, eliminating the Trailblazers from the event and ending VU’s season at 29-6.

A second quarter scoring drought put the Trailblazers in a 29-16 halftime deficit and the hole got deeper in the third quarter. VU spent much of that stanza working to slice the lead to single digits before the Salt Lake advantage stretched back to double digits and grew from there.

Sophomore Kyra Tucker scored 21 points and pulled down six rebounds while sophomore Brooke Dossett had 18 points and four assists to lead VU. Salt Lake sophomore Tilar Clark had a game-high 23 for the Bruins (31-2).

Salt Lake earned a slot in the tournament’s round of eight, facing the winner of another second round game between Trinity Valley and Northwest Florida State for a shot in the tournament’s Final Four.

VU was tied at 11-all with the Bruins after one quarter on Wednesday. But the Trailblazers didn’t score for the first five minutes of the second and Salt Lake eventually outscored VU 18-5 in the second 10 minutes. The cold shooting and inability to score left VU with a 6-for-24 shooting performance in the first half.

In the third, the Trailblazers went on a run of their own and Dossett scored 10 points during the tear to lead VU on a 16-6 run. It pulled VU within 42-35 as sophomore Chelsea Bentley drove and scored with just less than 4:00 remaining in the quarter. But Salt Lake stiffened and used its size and length to take control and pull back to a double-digit lead. That sank the Trailblazers’ chances for the rest of the contest.

After Bentley’s bucket, the Bruins’ Ma'ata Epenisa, Karina Brandon and Clark scored. Then, Salt Lake’s Andrea Brady hit a jumper just before the end of the quarter to make it 50-35. The third quarter rally by Salt Lake was part of the Bruins’ 33-22 scoring advantage in the paint and 43-33 rebounding advantage.
