LUBBOCK, Texas – The Vincennes University Women’s Basketball Team is tabbed as the 19th seed in the NJCAA Div. I Women’s Basketball National Championship Tournament that begins Monday in Lubbock, TX. The tournament runs through March 19.

The Trailblazers (28-5) are matched up with 14th seed Northeast Community College from Norfolk, NE, and the pair will tip off at 11 a.m. (“Vincennes time”) Tuesday from Lubbock’s Rip Griffin Center. The 67th annual tournament moved to Lubbock this year from Salina, KS.

In Northeast, 22nd-ranked and District P Tournament champion VU gets the nation’s 25th-ranked team entering the tournament. The Hawks (28-4) reached the tournament with an upset of No. 11-ranked Iowa Western in the championship of the Region 11 Tournament, then registered a win over State Fair in the district tournament. Northeast, which previously appeared in the 2013 NJCAA National Championship Tournament, enters this year’s event with 10 straight wins and victories in 13 of its last 14 games.

VU defeated top-seeded Shawnee in the District P championship game, 70-61, for an automatic national tournament bid as well. Prior to that win – the Trailblazers’ second victory over the Saints in a week – VU knocked off Wabash Valley and John A. Logan in its first two district tournament contests.

Gulf Coast State (28-1) is the tournament’s top seed. Shelton State (31-1) holds the No. 2 seed, while Salt Lake (30-2) is the third seed. New Mexico (30-2) and Southern Idaho (28-4) round out the top five seeds.

The winner of the VU-Northeast opener will face Salt Lake in the next round. That game will be at 6 p.m. (Eastern) Wednesday.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
