Western Chooses Nebraska

Vincennes, IN – Defending National Runner-up in the shot put, and 4-time NJCAA All-American Jamesha Western has decided to give her verbal commitment to the University of Nebraska to continue her academic and throwing career.

Western said on choosing Nebraska, “This is one of the biggest decisions I have ever made. When I was on campus, the University of Nebraska just felt right. The facilities were great, the academics were mind-blowing, I felt with everything they had to offer, it was the best place available for me to succeed, and hopefully make it to the Olympics.”

Western currently ranks: 3rd in school history in the hammer throw (157’9”), 2nd in school history in the shot put outdoors (48’3”), 4th in school history in the weight throw (51’2”), and is the indoor school record holder in the shot put at 50’0 ½”. Her school record throw came at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas. On the final throw, Western’s heave made her the NJCAA National Runner-up in the event, earning All-American accolades.

Western followed up her spectacular Indoor Nationals performance by earning All-American honors in all 3 of her events at the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships.

Assistant Track & Field Coach Tim Marsee said of Western, “Jamesha is one of the most determined athletes I have ever coached. She wants to get it right every time. She was being recruited by some of the biggest track and field programs in the country when she finally decided on Nebraska. We have been very blessed to have her here. Jamesha will make their program better in the way she goes about her work, and how she carries herself away from the track. Nebraska is getting a tremendous young lady, and a terrific athlete. She has made VU a better place just by being a student here.”

Western will look to continue her success as an athlete at Vincennes University in her final indoor and outdoor season when the team opens the season at the University of Illinois on January 13th.
