Western Garners All-American Honors on Day 1 of NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Hutchinson, KS – Red Hill High School Alumni Jamesha Western continued an incredible freshman year in the throwing events by garnering All-American Honors with a 6th place finish in the hammer throw this afternoon on the first day of the NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Hutchinson Community College.

Western came into the meet seeded 11th in the NJCAA, and her mark of 154’6” was the 3rd best throw in school history. Western not only moved up 5 spots to grab the 6th best mark of the day, but she also heaved the hammer a remarkable 159’7”, bettering her 3rd best mark in VU history.

Head Track & Field Coach Chris Gafner said of Western, “Jamesha came up big again at the best time possible. She moved up significantly from where she was ranked, and it was a great way for her to start the national championships.”

4 other athletes were slated to compete today for the Trailblazers. Sophomore Richard Griffith participated in the first 4 events of the decathlon this morning, but on the 5th, he was unable to clear his opening height in the high jump. The coaching staff decided it would be best to scratch him from the event, saving his energy for the pole vault which is set to take place on Saturday.

Pole Vaulters Aintzane Casterlenas Martinez & Merica Valdez, along with sophomore Anais Da Silva in the 10k, were also scheduled to compete today. However, due to inclement weather moving into the area, the 10,000m run was rescheduled for 7:00 a.m. local time tomorrow morning, and the women’s pole vault was moved to subsequently follow the men’s pole vault on Saturday.
