Women’s Basketball Rolls to Big Road Win at Division Foe John A. Logan

Carterville, IL- After a long trip to Poplar Bluff, MO on Tuesday, and dropping a tight, tough road loss at Three Rivers, the Vincennes University women’s basketball team returned to their winning ways by picking up a 76-63 road win at John A. Logan Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Trailblazers got off to a hot start by sharing the ball, and using a well-balanced scoring attack to stretch the Lady Volunteers defense, and force them to guard every player on the floor. VU also made it a priority to attack the basket, and get to the foul line. Vincennes shot 26 free-throws on the night, compared to 16 for John A. Logan. The Lady Trailblazers also out-shot John A. Logan from the floor. As a team, VU shot nearly 50% from the floor for the game, while holding their opponent to 36% shooting. Ultimately the balanced scoring attack was too much for John A. Logan to keep up with over the stretch of 40 minutes. VU lead by 3 after 1 quarter of play, 17 after 2 quarters of play, 15 after 3 quarters of play, and would pull away to win by 13, 76-63.

On the night, VU had 4 ladies score in double figures. Leading the way for the Trailblazers was Freshman Ladellia Maggett. Maggett had 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists. Then a trio of Sophomores rounded out the double figures scoring for the Trailblazers. Sophomore Jeanier Olukemi dropped 17 points and pulled down 8 rebounds, Laurhen Pickett had 18 points and 6 rebounds, and Milana Matias added 13 points.

After the game, Coach Meeks was very proud of the fire and determination his team played with. Meeks said, “The team played with a lot of desire. They wanted to prove that they could play to a higher level than they did at Three Rivers. We had three great days of practice, and their efforts paid off. It was great to have Jeanier Olukemi back on the court. Everyone on the team did a great job tonight, and I am very pleased with the outcome.”

The Lady Trailblazers will look to continue their winning ways this Saturday, December 17th, against the Tasmanian National Team at the VU P.E. Complex! Tip-off is at 1:00 P.M. EST!
